This volume, edited by Annemarie Hafner, compiles six major essays focusing on the socio-political dynamics of South Asia. The contributions cover a wide range of topics, including the history of the Indian working class, the intersection of caste and gender, the roots of the nationalist movement, and the prospects of regional economic cooperation (SAARC). It reflects the interdisciplinary South Asian studies program at the ZMO during the mid-1990s.
