Dieses erste Arbeitsheft des 1992 gegründeten Forschungsschwerpunktes Moderner Orient (heute ZMO) befasst sich am Beispiel Indiens mit der Transformation pluraler Gesellschaften. Die Beiträge analysieren Identitätskonflikte, soziale Bewegungen und die Rolle von Kaste und Ethnizität im Kontext von Modernisierung und Dekolonisation. Es markiert den programmatischen Beginn der Reihe und reflektiert die interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung des Instituts in seiner Gründungsphase.

This first publication of the Forschungsschwerpunkt Moderner Orient, founded in 1992 (today ZMO), examines the transformation of plural societies using India as an example. The contributions analyze identity conflicts, social movements, and the role of caste and ethnicity in the context of modernization and decolonization. It marks the programmatic beginning of the series and reflects the institute’s interdisciplinary orientation during its founding phase.
