Political Subjectivity and Revolutionary Motherhood : A Biographical Sketch of Surjeet Kaur
This article explores the life and work of Surjeet Kaur, an activist and educator deeply involved with the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). From 1981 to 1983, Kaur served as a Representative of the Asian Commission of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) in East Berlin. Her varied experiences enabled her to build networks with activists both within India and across African and Asian contexts. The piece, a biographical sketch, draws on the memories of Kaur’s daughter, Roly Jha, who accompanied her mother as a child on her first trip to the GDR.
